Gabčíkovo hydro-electric structure was originally designed and built as a part of the system on Danube river: Gabčíkovo – Nagymaros. This multipurpose system has begun to build under the 1977 Treaty, together with the Republic of Hungary, which terminated the contract in 1992. After the implementation of a substitute solution, called Variant C which caused a minor delay of the dam on Danube near Čunov in the Slovak territory, the system was put into operation in 1992. The primary purposes of the construction of the system on Danube river were the improvement of navigation conditions, flood protection and production of electric energy together with the recreational use and enhancement of tourism.
